Vol. 478 No. 1

Written Answers. - Hospital Consultant's Common Contract.

Batt O'Keeffe

Question:

62 Mr. B. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Health his views on the fact that under the common contract, consultants can take time off from duties in hospitals to pursue private practice whether it be at the courts or at tribunals and there is no recoupment whatsoever to the State; and the action, if any, he proposes to take on the matter. [10436/97]

Limerick East): I am aware of this practice and it is a matter that will be raised with the medical organisations which represent hospital consultants during the current round of discussions on the recommendations of the Review Body on Higher Remuneration in the Public Sector contained in report No. 36.
