Vol. 478 No. 1

Written Answers. - Hepatitis C Infection.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

67 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Health his views on whether patients who have been tested and found to be clear of hepatitis C should be informed, just as those found to be infected are informed in order that people are not left wondering; and if he will ensure that this rule of thumb is applied. [10487/97]

Limerick East): The Blood Transfusion Service Board, BTSB, considers it a requirement that individuals who have been tested for hepatitis C are notified of the result of the relevant tests regardless of whether the person tests positive or negative for hepatitis C antibodies or hepatitis C virus. The BTSB has informed me that it is fully aware of its duty of care to persons who undergo testing and that it ensures that all test results are available as quickly as possible and are communicated to the person concerned in a sensitive and caring manner.
