Vol. 478 No. 2

Written Answers. - Herring Licence.

Joe Walsh

Question:

152 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for the Marine if he will approve an application for a herring licence for a person (details supplied) in County Cork. [10852/97]

As advised in previous replies the position in relation to this application is as follows.

For a fishing vessel over 65 feet in registered length to be eligible for a herring licence, the registered tonnage capacity removed to enable its entry to the Irish fishing fleet must have previously fished actively for herring. As this condition was not fulfilled in relation to the vessel in question and as the registered length of the vessel is in excess of 65 feet, the fishing licence which issued to the applicant contains a general preclusion from fishing for herring or mackerel.

The person concerned indicated his intention to submit a technical report in support of his contention that the vessel's registered length is less than 65 feet and the matter will be reassessed in the light of this report.
