Vol. 478 No. 2

Written Answers. - Control of Farm Pollution.

Austin Deasy

Question:

26 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the current situation regarding the approval and payment of grants for the prevention of farmyard pollution; if applications under the scheme are being dealt with expeditiously; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10771/97]

Under the scheme for the control of farm pollution some 18,500 applications were received up to 27 April, 1995 when the scheme was suspended for new applications, due to the high level of demand compared with the funding available. Applications are being dealt with expeditiously. All applicants were contacted and requested to provide specific details regarding their proposals. By 31 March 1997, some 14,100 had been approved to carry out work. A further 2,400 applications were either being processed or awaiting return of necessary information from the applicants before being processed. The balance of some 2,000 applications were withdrawn following initial assessment by the Department's field officers.

Approximately £79 million has been paid in grants to applicants who have completed the approved works up to 31 March 1997.
