Vol. 478 No. 2

Written Answers. - Genetically Modified Produce.

Kathleen Lynch

Question:

29 Kathleen Lynch asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the Government's position regarding the development of genetically modified organisms, in particular fruit and vegetables; the research, if any, which has been carried out by his Department into the possible effects of these developments; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10751/97]

Genetic engineering covers a wide range of bio-technologies many of which have potential benefits to mankind. These include the production of vaccines and medicines, better quality and safer food, higher crop yields and a reduction in the use of chemicals in agriculture. To the extent that genetically engineered products, including fruit and vegetables, provide benefits, they are a welcome addition to the production of cheap and safe food products. However, we must ensure that possible risks to human health and the environment are adequately taken into account in releasing such products into the environment or onto the market.

The EU has enacted legislation concerning the approval and condition of use of genetic modification techniques and genetically modified organisms and their release into the environment. The Environment Protection Agency is responsible in Ireland for the implementation of this legislation. My Department has not undertaken any research into the possible effects of these developments.
