Vol. 478 No. 2

Written Answers. - Motor Taxation.

Helen Keogh

Question:

92 Ms Keogh asked the Minister for the Environment if he will grant a reduction in car tax to those people whose water supplies come from private wells or other sources at no cost to either local or central Government; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10920/97]

Under the new arrangements for financing local authorities, the proceeds of motor taxation at existing rates are being assigned to local authorities. This will have no impact on persons who obtain water from private wells or other sources, or on any category of motorist. This tax is payable in respect of mechanically propelled vehicles used in any public place and has nothing to do with the provision or funding of water supplies.

Question:

93 Ms Keogh asked the Minister for the Environment if the proposals he recently announced in relation to car taxes and the funding of local governments will have any implications, financial or otherwise, on the National Road Authority's budgets in 1997, or thereafter; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10921/97]

My proposals in relation to local government funding will have no implications for the National Roads Authority's finances.
