Vol. 478 No. 2

Written Answers. - Pupil-Teacher Ratio.

Michael Ring

Question:

98 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education the reason the teacher allocation for a school (details supplied) in County Mayo was reduced and part-time hours reduced in view of the fact that the pupil numbers have increased and the school is located in a disadvantaged area. [10819/97]

The teacher allocation for a secondary school for a particular school year consists of the posts warranted by the enrolment at the end of the preceding September on the basis of the current pupil teacher ratio, together with approved ex-quota and concessionary posts.

The authorities of the school to which the Deputy refers were notified of the teacher allocation for the 1997-8 school year on this basis. I should point out that the allocation includes ex-quota provision for guidance and also disadvantaged posts.
It is open to the authorities of school to submit an application to my Department for a concessionary increase in the allocation. Should such an application be received, it will be considered in the normal way and the school authorities advised of the decision as soon as possible.
