Vol. 478 No. 2

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Mary Coughlan

Question:

102 Miss Coughlan asked the Minister for Education if she will carry out a reappraisal of the provision of school transport to the joint national schools, Convoy, County Donegal; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [10870/97]

My Department has examined the case referred to by the Deputy. The pupils concerned reside approximately 1.1 miles from the service to Convoy joint national school. As they are considered to have an adequate level of service in the overall context of the school transport scheme, I have no plans to change the current arrangements.

In the organisation of school transport services, primary school transport routes are planned so that no eligible child will have more than 1.5 miles to travel to a pick-up point.

It would not be open to my Department to extend an existing service, sanction an additional trip or provide an extra vehicle to accommodate pupils who are within the range of an existing service.
