Vol. 478 No. 3

Written Answers. - Animal Feedstuffs.

Joe Walsh

Question:

130 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if and when he will seek the necessary changes in EU regulations to compel compounders to voluntarily declare feed ingredients in descending order in view of their clear reluctance to do so. [11024/97]

EU legislation requires that the label on compound feedstuffs shows all the ingredients in descending order by weight. As an option, compounders may declare categories of ingredients which are prescribed. Up to some time ago most compounders adopted the latter approach.

However, recently many more compounders are opting for full declaration of ingredients in descending order by weight and it is expected that this trend will continue. I am most anxious that this should become the norm as soon as possible. A decision on seeking a change in the EU regulations will be made in the light of ongoing developments.
