Vol. 478 No. 3

Written Answers. - Director of Telecomniunications Regulation.

Noel Treacy

Question:

21 Mr. N. Treacy asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the date on which a director of communications regulations will be appointed; the responsibilities this person will have; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10924/97]

The competition for appointment to the post of Director of Telecommunications Regulation is currently being run by the Civil Service Commission which is conducting interviews for the post this week. I would hope to have the name of a suitable person in the very near future and the appointment will be made as soon as possible thereafter and in any event before the end of June next.

The functions of the director will be those functions set out in and transferred in the Telecommunications (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1996 which are, broadly, the existing regulatory functions carried out by me as Minister. Other functions may be transferred to the director in the future, including those arising from the process of transposition of EU law into national law.
