Vol. 478 No. 3

Written Answers. - Grant Aid.

Tony Killeen

Question:

73 Mr. Killeen asked the Minister for Education the plans, if any, she has to provide grant aid towards the cost of refurbishment and development of the home of GAA founder, Michael Cusack, at Carron, County Clare, as proposed by Clare GAA County Board. [11030/97]

My Department administers the sports capital programme which assists with the provision of sporting and recreational facilities at local, regional and national levels.

The development of the home of Michael Cusack would appear to be a historical and cultural facility and as such would not be eligible for assistance under the programme. However, I will arrange to forward an application form and a copy of the conditions of the programme to the Clare County Board. If, having examined the conditions of the programme, the county board consider that their project may be eligible for assistance they should complete the application form and return it to my Department.

An application in respect of the project will then be considered on its merits and in the context of the funds available for the programme. Currently there are in excess of 1,200 projects on hand.
