Vol. 478 No. 3

Written Answers. - Beef Processing Industry.

Ivor Callely

Question:

101 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the allegations made against the beef processing industry over the past seven years; the persons who made allegations against the industry which were found to be without foundation; the effects, if any, such allegations had on the Irish beef market; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10991/97]

Allegations made during the period 1984 to 1994 regarding the Irish beef industry have been fully investigated by the beef tribunal. The report of the tribunal, as published in August 1994, gives details of the tribunal's findings in relation to any allegations made in that period.

Various allegations are made from time to time about the beef processing industry, many of which are without foundation. However, it is not the practice of my Department to maintain a record of all such allegations. My Department is anxious to investigate any allegations about wrong doing on the part of the beef processing industry and I would ask the Deputy to provide me with the details of any allegations if he feels they merit investigation.
