Vol. 478 No. 4

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Michael Smith

Question:

129 Mr. M. Smith asked the Minister for Education the amount of funds made available for the building of Roscrea community college, County Tipperary, in the 1997 Estimates; and when the project will commence. [11136/97]

The planning and building unit of my Department is examining the developed sketch scheme and when the submission has been found to be satisfactory the project will proceed to the next stage of planning which is the detail design. However, it is not possible to say when construction of the new school will commence.

At this stage of planning, the question of allocating funds does not arise.

Ned O'Keeffe

Question:

130 Mr. E. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Education the plans, if any, which have been put in place to ensure the retention of a second-level school (details supplied) in County Cork. [11137/97]

The position is that the planning section of my Department has held consultations with the relevant parties with a view to making alternative arrangements for the continuity of educational provision for post-primary pupils from the area in question. A formal proposal from County Cork Vocational Education Committee to take over the management of the school has been received.

I can assure the Deputy that this matter is receiving urgent attention and I am hopeful that a decision in this regard can be made in the near future.
