Vol. 478 No. 4

Written Answers. - Special Education Needs.

Tony Gregory

Question:

156 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education the reason teachers working with pupils who have severe learning difficulties do not have access to a special education course (details supplied); and if this matter will be urgently reviewed. [11303/97]

The course referred to by the Deputy is organised by a constituent college of a university. I understand that the course in question is very broad in orientation and that the course director considers it would not adequately meet the needs of teachers working with children having severe-profound mental handicap.

In regard to the in-service needs of these teachers, the in-career development unit of my Department commissioned the special education department of St. Patrick's Training College to organise a week long course followed by a two day review programme in March and June of 1996 for such teachers.

I have requested my officials to have further discussions with the relevant authorities as to the best way to meet the in-service needs of these teachers.
