Vol. 478 No. 4

Written Answers. - Mental Handicap Services.

Noel Ahern

Question:

78 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Health the current position in relation to the proposed five year plan for the mentally handicapped; the number seeking residential places as confirmed by the database compilation; and if this waiting list will be cleared in the lifetime of the plan. [11441/97]

Last week I published the Assessment of Need for Services to Persons with a Mental Handicap, 1997-2001. The assessment provides a comprehensive picture of the requirements for additional residential and day services over the period concerned.

A total of 1,439 persons require a residential placement. This is made up of 159 persons who currently have no service and require a residential service and 1,280 persons who currently receive a day service but also require a residential service.
The Government is committed, under Partnership 2000 for Inclusion, Employment and Competitiveness, to the development of services to persons with a mental handicap, within overall resource parameters, based on the Assessment of Need.
