Vol. 478 No. 5

Written Answers. - Attacks on the Elderly.

John O'Donoghue

Question:

119 Mr. O'Donoghue asked the Minister for Justice the number of reported attacks on elderly persons in the past 12 months; the number of prosecutions which followed; the number of convictions; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [11656/97]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that there were 183 indictable offences in 1995 where the victims were aged 65 years or more and where the victims were subject to injury or threat. I am further informed that detections were made in 64 of these cases. Information is not readily available as to how many of the cases resulted in conviction.

Statistics for 1996 will be published later in the year.
