Vol. 478 No. 5

Written Answers. - Prisoner Releases.

John O'Donoghue

Question:

123 Mr. O'Donoghue asked the Minister for Justice the steps, if any, which are taken to ensure that sex offenders are not prematurely released into the community; and if they are released that notification is given to the victim or the family of the victim. [11660/97]

Prisoners serving sentences for sex offences are not granted any form of early release. However, as the Deputy will be aware, I have no option but to release persons convicted of sex offences when they have completed their sentence. In particular cases arrangements are made to notify the Garda about an imminent release of a sex offender so that the Garda can notify the victims and make whatever policing arrangements they consider necessary and appropriate.
