Vol. 478 No. 5

Written Answers. - Death of Irish Citizen.

Seán Power

Question:

31 Mr. Power asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs the steps, if any, being taken by him to ensure that a proper investigation is carried out into the death of a person (details supplied) who died in France; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11566/97]

The investigation of this person's death is the responsibility of the judicial authorities in France. It is being conducted by a Juge d'Instruction, an investigating magistrate, with whom the Embassy in Paris is in regular contact.

The investigating magistrate has recently informed the Embassy that the forensic testing of hundreds of items of evidence collected by the police is still under way and that when the results are to hand he will decide the next step in the investigation.

My Department and the Embassy in Paris will continue to monitor developments and to assist the family of the deceased in any practical way we can.
