Vol. 478 No. 5

Written Answers. - Health Services Funding.

Noel Ahern

Question:

54 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Health his views on the lack of funding provided by his Department and the relevant health boards to the CARI foundation who tend to the post-assessment needs of children who are victims of sexual abuse; his views on whether the foundation is carrying out a necessary professional function; the reason he will not provide core funding to its various locations; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11633/97]

Health boards have statutory responsibility for the investigation and management of child abuse cases and for the development of appropriate services to assist victims of abuse. In developing services, health boards have placed particular emphasis on the need to foster close co-operation and co-ordination among the different professionals and agencies involved in this complex and sensitive area.

I understand CARI are in discussion with two health boards at present regarding the question of funding and to consider how best their service might fit in with the boards' overall development plans.
