Vol. 478 No. 5

Written Answers. - Teacher Appointments.

Joe Walsh

Question:

81 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for Education the number of art teachers employed in the second-level educational system; if he will give a breakdown of this number by full-time and part-time status and by the nature of these persons' art teaching qualifications; the criteria in place for assessing incremental level and qualification-related bonuses in each instance; and the extent of art teaching being undertaken by non-qualified art teachers. [11496/97]

The information in relation to the number and status of teachers of art employed in second level schools is not readily available in my Department.

In order to be eligible for appointment as a permanent teacher of art in a second level school an applicant is required to have an approved academic qualification in the subject and an appropriate qualification in Irish.

In the case of such appointments in a secondary, community or comprehensive school, it is also necessary for the applicant to hold an acceptable training-in-teaching qualification.

Tony Gregory

Question:

82 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education if a concessionary teacher will be appointed to a school (details supplied) in Dublin 10, to cater for children with learning difficulties, in view of the large number of children in this school from a disadvantaged social background and to allow them equality of support with the local boys' national school. [11497/97]

Since becoming Minister for Education, I have allocated 68 additional concessionary teaching posts under the disadvantaged areas scheme. This brings the total number of concessionary posts at primary level to 293.

Such posts are allocated to schools in disadvantaged areas where resources permit and on the basis of priority of need.

In the event of such posts becoming available, the needs of the schools in question will be considered.
