Vol. 478 No. 6

Written Answers. - Schools Refurbishment.

Ned O'Keeffe

Question:

124 Mr. E. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Education if funding has been allocated to a school (details supplied) in County Cork in order to overcome and prevent the problem of dry rot. [11757/97]

My Department's building unit asked the school to commission a report from a specialist in the area of dry rot. This report was examined by my Department's technical staff and the school was authorised to prepare tender documentation for the work in question.

These documents were submitted to my Department recently and are currently being examined by my Department's technical staff. When the documents have been approved, the Department will authorise the invitation of tenders for the work involved.

Question:

125 Mr. E. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Education when grant-aid will be approved for a school (details supplied) in County Cork in order to resurface the school yard, install a new heating system and replace existing windows which are jammed and cannot be opened. [11758/97]

Question:

127 Mr. E. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Education when payment of grant-aid of a substantial sum due since 1995 to a school (details supplied) in County Cork will be issued; and if her attention has been drawn to the fact that urgent electrical work cannot be carried out until the grant is paid and that the windows cannot be opened to ventilate the classrooms which become very hot due to the old type storage heating in place. [11760/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 125 and 127 together.

No grant was sanctioned by my Department towards refurbishment and electrical works carried out by the school referred to by the Deputy. This work was undertaken without reference to my Department.

My Department has no record of receiving an application for grant-aid towards resurfacing the school yard or replacing windows. If an application is received, it will be considered and a decision conveyed to the school management.

A report from my Department's engineer following his recent inspection of the electrical and heating installation is currently being considered within my Department. A decision will be conveyed to the school shortly.
