Vol. 478 No. 6

Written Answers. - Bovine Diseases.

Joe Walsh

Question:

194 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if he will give details of the trends in the incidence of brucellosis over the past 12 months; and the additional controls, if any, he is putting in place to eradicate this disease. [11880/97]

The number of brucellosis herd restrictions has increased significantly in the past year. Currently there are some 340 herds restricted including some 130 herds which have had two or more clear tests but have not been derestricted under national legislation. Discussions are currently taking place between my Department and representatives of the farming bodies and veterinary groups with a view to finalising a number of measures to redress the position.
