201 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if commitment number 21 in the programme, A Government of Renewal, was broken in relation to the sale of Telecom Éireann; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11707/97]
The Telecom Éireann strategic alliance with KPN and Telia involving the sale of up to 35 per cent of the company to the strategic partners, clearly meets the criteria set out in A Government of Renewal. The strategic alliance is an essential element of the strategy to enable Telecom Éireann to adapt successfully to the increasingly competitive marketplace and is therefore in the long-term interest of the company and its stakeholders.
