Vol. 478 No. 6

Written Answers. - Harbour Works.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

209 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for the Marine the sources of funding currently available for pier maintenance; the levels of investment and locations of such investment in 1995 and 1996; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11810/97]

Most piers around the coast are owned by local authorities, who have responsibility for their repair and maintenance.

The Department is directly responsible for maintenance of piers and facilities in the five State owned fishery harbour centres.

Maintenance spending on these harbours during 1995 and 1996 is as follows:

Killybegs

Castletownbere

Rossaveal

Howth

Dunmore East

1995

55,052

23,494

8,816

18,090

52,837

1996

13,745

5,296

4,449

19,946

6,731

A further £20,000 approximately was invested per annum in 1995 and 1996 on the maintenance of a number of minor piers, lights and beacons constructed under the Marine Works (Ireland) Act, 1902, or by the congested districts board, for which the Department of the Marine has statutory responsibility.
