Vol. 478 No. 6

Written Answers. - Cloning of Animals.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

72 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Health whether there are any regulatory or administrative controls on research into cloning of animals; if so, whether any such research is currently taking place; the animal models being used in this research; and if there is no such research taking place currently, whether he would authorise it. [11780/97]

Limerick East): Ethics committees are in place in institutions using live animals for research purposes. I am advised that no research of the type referred to involving live animals is currently taking place. I recognise that areas of assisted reproduction and related research require separate examination and careful consideration is being given as to how best this might be carried out.
