Vol. 478 No. 7

Written Answers - Sports Capital Programme.

Noel Ahern

Question:

179 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Education the resources made available in the past three years for the planning and construction of sports halls in secondary schools; the schools and projects approved; the average local contributions made available; the position of St. Michael's Holy Faith School, Finglas, Dublin 11, on the list for such funding; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [12285/97]

It is the policy of my Department to provide PE halls on a phased basis as resources permit to all schools which do not already have them.

In 1995, provision was made for the architectural planning of physical education halls at ten schools. A further two schools were added to this list in 1996. It is proposed to commence construction on a number of these in 1997 and to complete arthitectural design on the remainder. The names of the 12 schools are circulated in the Official Report.

The question of providing physical education facilities at St. Michael's Holy Faith school, Finglas, Dublin 11, which is not one of the schools listed on the capital programme, can only be considered in the context of the capital available for post-primary building purposes generally, because of the huge demand for additional classroom accommodation in schools throughout the country. I am not in a position at this stage to state when physical education facilities will be provided in this particular case. However, should financial circumstances permit, the school will be given every consideration.
