Vol. 478 No. 7

Written Answers - Suckler Cow Quota.

Michael Finucane

Question:

228 Mr. Finucane asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if he will restore a suckler cow quota to a person (details supplied) in County Limerick in view of the fact that this person had to sell off animals due to a health problem in 1995 and now requires the restoration of the quota. [12078/97]

Under EU Regulations effective up to 1996, farmers holding suckler cow quotas were required to use at least 50 per cent of the quota in any one of two consecutive years, otherwise the quota not used in the second year would be forfeited and returned to the National Reserve.

The person named did not use any of his quota in 1994 or in 1995. He failed to reply to a request from the Department in June 1996 for the reasons for the non-usage of his quota.

His entire quota was, therefore, returned to the National Reserve.
