Noel Treacy

Question:

66 Mr. N. Treacy asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the serious crisis which is currently prevailing in the health services due to the paramedics dispute; the reason both himself and his Department have refused to maintain the link between payments to nurses and paramedics which have been linked over the years; the action, if any, he proposes to take to resolve this dispute; if his attention has been drawn to the low morale of staff due to this situation and the trauma being inflicted on families and patients as a result of this industrial dispute; and if he will make a statement on the matter.[12009/97]

Limerick East): I wish to take Questions Nos. 21 and 66 together. The paramedics' pay dispute was referred to the Labour Court for hearing on Monday, 28 April 1997. The court issued its findings on 30 April 1997, recommending, in summary, an increase of 5.5 per cent at the minimum point of each scale, 10.5 per cent of the maximum point of each scale, and a 2 per cent long service increment on the basic entry grade scale.

In addition, the court also recommended setting up an expert group to examine and report on the changes in the relevant professions and in this context to address the anomalies within the group. As the Deputies are no doubt aware, IMPACT, on behalf of the paramedic professions has suspended strike action and is currently balloting its members on the basis of the Labour Court's recommendation.
