Written Answers - Water Pollution.

Declan Bree

Question:

64 Mr. Bree asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the fact that on 25 September 1996, Deputy Bree made written representations to the Western Health Board regarding a public nuisance and hazard at Derryvunny, Corrigeenroe, County Roscommon; if his attention has further been drawn to the fact that in a reply to Deputy Bree dated 10 December 1996, a person (details supplied) confirmed that water sampling from the area indicated a high level of faecal contamination; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that despite undertakings given by the Western Health Board to have the problem cleared up, no action has been taken against the person responsible for the pollution; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12000/97]

Limerick East): Inquiries were made from the Western Health Board regarding this matter. I am advised that the pollution problem referred to is caused by overflow from a septic tank in the area. Remedial work to alleviate the problem is being carried out at the board's request. Officers from the board's Environmental Health Department have been in contact with the person responsible for completing the work and will be monitoring the progress being made.
