Eric J. Byrne

Question:

9 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform the proposals, if any, he has to introduce comprehensive race relations legislation in view of the growing number of non-nationals living in the country; the recommendations, if any, his Department has made in relation to the current review of non-nationals legislation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12273/97]

The Employment Equality and Equal Status Bills contain provisions prohibiting discrimination on the grounds, inter alia, of race, colour, nationality and national or ethnic origin. These Bills have been passed by both Houses of the Oireachtas and have been referred by the President to the Supreme Court for a decision as to whether they are repugnant to the Constitution.

It is not the practice to disclose the content of communications, if any, with other Government Departments.
