Limerick East): I am committed to ensuring that the health care system operates as efficiently as possible and that resources are used to maximum benefit. Systems and programmes are in place to ensure that the situation is continuously under review and that the best value for money is obtained within the health services. This is a central theme in my Department's strategy document “Shaping a healthier future” which highlights the need to evaluate economy, efficiency, and increasingly effectiveness, in the provision of a quality health service.

One such area which receives particular attention in my Department relates to value for money and particularly the materials management function. With increased co-operation and co-ordination between the health agencies it should be possible for a more efficient materials management programmes to be delivered.

The Deputy will also be aware of the enhanced role of the Public Accounts Committee and the Comptroller and Auditor General under legislation passed in 1993. The Comptroller and Auditor General now has a role in auditing health boards and he also has a value for money remit.
