Vol. 479 No. 2

Written Answers. - Driving Instructors' Register.

Noel Dempsey

Question:

144 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for the Environment the plans, if any, he has for the introduction and maintenance of a driving instructors' register; and if so, the proposed qualification criteria for acceptance onto such a register. [12605/97]

There is a voluntary scheme of registration of driving instructors which was established jointly by the two national associations representing motor schools and driving instructors, in association with the Irish Insurance Federation and with financial assistance from both my Department and the insurance federation. In order to become a qualified instructor under the scheme, it is necessary to pass a three-part examination. It is my intention to monitor the progress of this scheme for a period of time before deciding whether to establish more formal regulation of driving instruction.
