Vol. 479 No. 2

Written Answers. - Adult Education.

Charles Flanagan

Question:

167 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Education if she will increase funding for adult literacy and community education in view of the ongoing programme of work undertaken by Aontas and Nala in providing learning opportunities for adults unable to read and write; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [12455/97]

The funding provided by my Department to Aontas and NALA, and for adult literacy and community education in general, has been progressively increased in recent years. It is my intention to continue this trend as resources permit.

My commitment to develop and enhance the programmes in place to address literacy and numeracy problems, and adult education in general, is reflected both in the policy measures proposed in the White Paper "Charting Our Education Future" and the commitments made under Partnership 2000.
