Vol. 479 No. 2

Written Answers. - Teacher Appointments.

Noel Dempsey

Question:

178 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for Education if she will honour the announcement made over two years ago in respect of appointing a remedial teacher to Ardcath national school, County Meath; and if she will ensure this appointment is not at the expense of the remedial services in neighbouring schools. [12467/97]

Mary Wallace

Question:

180 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Education the position in relation to the need for the appointment of a remedial teacher at a school (details supplied) in County Meath; the reason the remedial teacher service which the school had was withdrawn in December 1995; and when the much-needed remedial teacher will be appointed to the school. [12517/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 178 and 180 together.

I am aware of the case made by the school in question for the appointment of a remedial teacher.

My Department's efforts to respond to this need have proved unsuccessful to-date due to difficulties associated with the proposed extension of an existing service to meet the needs of this school. The withdrawal of service to which Deputy Wallace refers resulted from these difficulties.

My Department is continuing its efforts to arrange a remedial service for the school in question.
