Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Noel Treacy

Question:

189 Mr. N. Treacy asked the Minister for Education if she will ensure that the current complement of teachers employed in a school (details supplied) in County Galway are retained there for the next school year; if her attention has been drawn to the serious difficulties being encountered by this school due to the serious social problems in its catchment area; if her attention has further been drawn to the special needs of a large number of children in this school; and if she will maintain the existing staff structure in order to provide a proper teaching environment for the children attending this school; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [12561/97]

Michael P. Kitt

Question:

230 Mr. M. Kitt asked the Minister for Education if she will reconsider the situation of a school (details supplied) in County Galway which is due to lose two teachers in view of enrolment numbers on 30 September 1997; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [12867/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 189 and 230 together.

I am pleased to inform the Deputies that the school to which they refer will retain its eighth assistant's post for the 1997-98 school year. However, the ninth assistant's post will be suppressed at the end of the current school year because the school failed to achieve an enrolment of 257 on 30 September 1996.
I am also pleased to inform the Deputies that the school will, of course, retain its ex quota posts which are a concessionary disadvantaged post, a remedial teacher, three special additional assistant teachers to cater for pupils with special needs, a home-school liaison teacher and a shared resource teacher.
