Vol. 479 No. 2

Written Answers. - Prison Officers' Association.

Mary O'Rourke

Question:

242 Mrs. O'Rourke asked the Minister for Justice if any official of the Prison Officers' Association is being paid by her Department for duties carried out for her Department; if so, the amount being paid; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [12534/97]

My Department is paying no official of the Prison Officers' Association to carry out duties on its behalf. I would also refer the Deputy to Parliamentary Question No. 266 on 18 June 1996 in relation to an officer who was granted special leave with pay, but no overtime, to work with the Prison Officers' Association.

Question:

243 Mrs. O'Rourke asked the Minister for Justice the amount which was paid to her Department by the Prison Officers' Association as a result of secondment; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [12535/97]

The Prison Officer's Association refunds my Department in respect of the salaries and allowances of two officers from the prison service who are on secondment to their association. Employers' PRSI and superannuation costs are also refunded. The total amount involved for the year ending 31 December 1996 was £45,653.12. There is no net cost to the Department.
