Vol. 479 No. 2

Written Answers. - Grading Standards for Potatoes.

Joe Walsh

Question:

327 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if he will introduce minimum presentation standards for early potatoes in summer 1997 in view of the poor quality of some imported early potatoes being placed on sale. [12632/97]

The Food Standards (Potatoes) Regulations, 1977 and 1996 lay down minimum quality and grading standards for potatoes offered for sale for human consumption. The regulations do not apply to new potatoes. My Department's inspectorate continues to monitor the quality of all potatoes placed on the market and the question of extending the regulations will be examined if the need arises.
