Vol. 479 No. 2

Written Answers. - Islands Development Fund.

Pat the Cope Gallagher

Question:

43 Mr. Gallagher (Donegal South-West) asked the Taoiseach the reason funding is not being provided from the Islands Development Fund for urgent repairs to the Rannagh Pier, Aphort, Arranmore Island; if he will provide the necessary funding in view of the importance of this pier; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12436/97]

The allocation of funding for the development of access and infrastructure on offshore islands is based on lists of priority projects selected by the islands committees of the relevant local authorities. Rannagh Pier, Aphort, Arranmore Island was not included as a priority project by Donegal County Council's islands Committee.

To date grants totalling nearly £224,000 have been approved for priority access projects for Donegal's offshore islands. In respect of priority projects to improve access to Arranmore Island, grants totalling £23,000 were made available in 1996 towards the cost of works on the slipway at Leabgarrow and the pier at Burtonport.
