Vol. 479 No. 3

Written Answers. - Commemorative Events.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

139 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for Defence if he will ensure that a person (details supplied) in Dublin 7 will be given an explanation as to the reason she was not given her designated seat or any seat at the annual 1916 Easter Rising commemoration ceremonies at Arbour Hill, Dublin 7, on 7 May 1997; if he has satisfied himself that relatives invited to these ceremonies are being treated with respect and courtesy; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12974/97]

Designated sections of the Church of the Most Sacred Heart are provided for seating the various categories of guests invited to attend the annual 1916 Easter Rising commemoration ceremonies at Arbour Hill. Every endeavour is made to ensure that all guests are seated in the appropriate area. However, when a particular area is filled to capacity, which may happen when relatives are accompanied by family members, alternative seating is provided. On the day in question all of the invited guests were provided with seating and nobody was obliged to stand.

The person in question in this case telephoned the Department to make inquiries in the matter and the position with regard to seating arrangements has been explained to her.

I am entirely satisfied that relatives attending these ceremonies are treated with respect and courtesy at all times.
