Vol. 479 No. 3

Written Answers. - Land Use Policy.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

44 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for the Environment the development to date of the proposed national land use policy plan; and when he expects the plan to be published. [12909/97]

As I indicated previously in the House, my Department has been preparing a series of guidelines on land use policy issues for local planning authorities and An Bord Pleanála. Guidelines on telecommunications antennae and support structures and wind farm development have already been published. Draft consultation guidelines on forestry development were published and issued to a wide range of interested parties on 10 January last and will issue in final form as soon as possible. Guidelines on high amenity landscapes, the scope and content of development plans and archaeology will be issued for public consultation later this year.

As indicated in the recently published, Sustainable Development: A Strategy for Ireland, priority subjects for further land use guidelines will include the operation of development control, enforcement, and protected habitats. Taken together, the strategy and the guidelines will provide a comprehensive policy framework for land use planning.
