Vol. 479 No. 3

Written Answers. - Grant Aid.

Dermot Ahern

Question:

68 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the applications made to his Department by organisations in County Louth in each of the past five years; the various amounts allocated to groups in County Louth; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13036/97]

Given the breadth of the Deputy's question, it was not possible, in the limited time available, to carry out the exhaustive inquiries which would be necessary to identify every individual application made by organisations in County Louth to my Department since its establishment in January 1993.

With regard to Irish language projects, a number of applications were received by my Department and grants approved-paid are as follows:

£

1993

Slógadh Dhún Dealgan

2,000

1994

1995

Scoil Críost Rí, Dundalk

10,000

1996

Refurbishment works to Conradh na

60,000

Gaeilge headquarters, Dundalk

A number of payments were also made by the then National Heritage Council through my Department's Vote to projects in County Louth during the period January 1993 to July 1995 when the statutory heritage council was established. These included:

£

1993

St. Nicholas Church restoration, Dundalk

16,195

1994

Beaulieu House restoration, Drogheda

10,000

Bush Church restoration

2,474

Computerisation of Dundalk Museum

2,384

1995

Magdalone Tower restoration, Drogheda

12,500

Computerisation of Dundalk Museum

8,722

In the context of the cultural development incentives scheme, the position is that one application was received under phase I of the scheme, which was advertised in December 1994, in respect of a project in County Louth. This application was not successful. With regard to phase II of the scheme, which was advertised in November 1996, a total of five applications were received by my Department in respect of projects in County Louth. None of these applications have been successful at this stage. However, one of those applicants has separately sought funding for its project under the INTERREG II programme and I hope to be in a position to make a decision on this application in the near future.
The Deputy will also be aware that considerable expenditure was incurred by the National Monuments and Historic Properties Service of my Department on works at Old Mellifont Abbey, County Louth, including the provision of a new exhibition centre which I was pleased to open officially last June.
