Vol. 479 No. 3

Written Answers. - Water Pollution.

Mary Harney

Question:

78 Miss Harney asked the Minister for the Environment if he will have investigations made into complaints of pollution of the water supply in Athlacca, Kilmallock, County Limerick; the steps, if any, which have been taken to locate the source of the pollution; and if he will ensure that a clean water supply is restored as soon as possible. [12983/97]

Limerick County Council submitted an application under the small schemes programme for a grant of £40,000 in 1997 for the provision of a new groundwater source at Athlacca to replace the existing well which, the council have advised, is subject to occasional slight pollution, possibly of septic tank origin. As already announced, responsibility for the administration of this programme in 1997 and future years has been devolved to the local authorities, subject to existing commitments on foot of approvals issued by my Department. It is, therefore, a matter for local authorities to decide on priorities locally within the block grant allocations for 1997 which issued to local authorities on 26 March.
