Vol. 480 No. 3

Written Answers - Teacher Appointments.

Ivan Yates

Question:

74 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Education if he will urgently consider the appointment of a special resource teacher for a school (details supplied) in County Wexford in view of the problems the school is experiencing with its second class and the fact that they are losing their seventh assistant teacher; if they will retain their existing teacher as a special resource teacher; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14178/97]

In March 1997 the outgoing Minister for Education agreed staffing arrangements for primary schools for the next school year with the Irish National Teachers Organisation.

These agreed arrangements were based on the allocation of all surplus posts available for redistribution from the demographic dividend for the 1997-98 school year and included the allocation of 26 resource teacher posts to primary schools with effect from September 1997.

Accordingly, I am not in a position at present to allocate additional resource teacher posts to primary schools. However, I assure the Deputy that the needs of all schools, including the school to which he refers, will be considered in the context of any future allocation of resource teacher posts which may be undertaken.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

75 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Education if he will sanction a concessionary post in accordance with disadvantaged status in relation to the amalgamation of two schools (details supplied) in Dublin 11 in order that the two remedial teachers will be retained. [14179/97]

I am pleased to inform the Deputy that, in accordance with normal arrangements relating to the amalgamation of schools, the two remedial teacher posts to which the Deputy refers will be retained as part of the amalgamation arrangement.

In March 1997 the outgoing Minister for Education agreed staffing arrangements for primary schools for the next school year with the Irish National Teachers Organisation. These agreed arrangements were based on the allocation of all surplus posts available for redistribution from the demographic dividend for the 1997-98 school year. Accordingly, I am not in a position at present to allocate additional concessionary teaching posts to primary schools.

In the event of additional concessionary teaching posts becoming available, the needs of the school in question will be considered.
