Vol. 480 No. 6

Written Answers - Hospital Services.

Bernard Allen

Question:

306 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children the discussions, if any, he has had with the South Infirmary/Victoria Hospital, Cork, regarding the major deficiencies in the level of geriatric care in the Cork area, as noted in the 1994 Strategy Review and Development Proposals of the South Infirmary/Victoria Hospital; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14966/97]

The organisation and development of services for older people in the Cork area is a matter for the Southern Health Board. I understand that the nature of specialist services for older people to be provided at the South Infirmary-Victoria Hospital is to be discussed shortly between the management of the South Infirmary-Victoria Hospital and the Southern Health Board, including the consultant physicians in medicine of old age.

When the exact requirements are known it will be a matter for the Southern Health Board and hospital management to formulate proposals which will then be considered by my Department.
