Vol. 480 No. 6

Written Answers - Local Authorities.

Deirdre Clune

Question:

323 Ms Clune asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government when a decision will be forthcoming on an application made by the Ballincollig Enterprise Board for UDC status for Ballincollig, County Cork. [15218/97]

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

359 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if consideration will be given to the application for town commission status for Maynooth, County Kildare, in 1997; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14796/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 323 and 359 together.

The Local Government Act, 1994, provides for the repeal of the nineteenth century statutory provisions relating to the establishment of town commissions and urban district councils. It is the aim to bring forward legislation next year for the modernisation of local government law generally. This will include a modern statutory framework for local authority structures with provision for the creation of new local authorities. Any proposals for the establishment of new authorities will fall to be considered in that context.
