Vol. 480 No. 6

Written Answers - Summer Jobs Scheme.

Michael Ring

Question:

373 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs when a person (details supplied) in County Mayo will be approved for the student summer jobs scheme for 1997. [14335/97]

The underlying purpose of the student summer jobs scheme is to provide income support for less well-off third level students who are disqualified from receiving unemployment assistance and who are unable to obtain summer work. In order to qualify under the scheme, students must satisfy a means test which is broadly similar to that applying in the case of unemployment assistance. Those who established a minimum entitlement to unemployment assistance were approved to participate and issued with a job certificate. As the person concerned did not satisfy the means test, he did not qualify to participate in this year's scheme. He was so notified during week commencing 7 July 1997.
