Vol. 480 No. 6

Written Answers - Special Tax Incentives.

Enda Kenny

Question:

433 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the arrangements, if any, she is putting in place to have special tax incentives introduced to encourage cultural developments; the nature of the proposed incentives, if any; when these will be introduced; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [14827/97]

The matter referred to by the Deputy is identified as a key priority in relation to the arts in the programme for Government - An Action Programme for the Millennium.

The question of the putting in place of any special tax incentives is a matter for the Minister for Finance. As the Deputy will be aware there is already in place a range of tax incentives to encourage development in the cultural sector. I will be examining, in consultation with An Chomhairle Ealaíon, what areas in the sector might benefit from further incentive schemes and, if the arguments in support of the introduction of such schemes are convincing both in terms of the benefit to the sectors that would be directly concerned and to the economy generally, I will seek the agreement of my colleague, the Minister for Finance, to their introduction.
