Enda Kenny

Question:

435 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the criteria she proposes to give the Arts Council to examine the issue and support of disabled artists as outlined in the Programme for Government; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [14829/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 434 and 435 together.

The question of support for disabled artists and for a more regional emphasis in the arts are matters for An Chomhairle Ealaíon, a fact which is made clear in the reference to both these important issues in the text of this Government's Programme - An Action Programme for the Millennium. I have been informed by An Chomhairle that it is reviewing its arts plan and I would expect these issues to be addressed by An Chomhairle in the context of that review.

However, as the Deputy will be aware, An Chomhairle enjoys statutory independent status under the Arts Acts, 1951 and 1973.
