Vol. 480 No. 6

Written Answers - Garda Pay.

Michael Ring

Question:

455 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform when the Garda Síochána will be awarded a pay increase. [14248/97]

A fundamental review of Garda efficiency and effectiveness was completed recently. The review group, examined, inter alia, the role of the Force and how it is functioning and it is understood that the group has made recommendations which will involve change.

The report of the review group will shortly be submitted to Government for consideration and in that context the Government will be offered the opportunity of examining how the issues affecting the structure of Garda pay and allowances might be addressed in the context of delivering the changes recommended in the report.
Any outcome will have to be reconciled with the overall policy of the Government on public service pay.
