Vol. 480 No. 6

Written Answers - Refugee Status.

Tony Gregory

Question:

477 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will ensure that the proposed marriage of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 7 to an Irish citizen will be taken into account when his application for permission to remain in this jurisdiction is being considered. [14496/97]

It is not the practice to comment publicly on individual applications having regard to the fact that applications by their nature are made in confidence, with an expectation by applicants that such confidence will be preserved.

I can, however, say that an application for refugee status is considered on the criteria as set out in the 1951 UN Convention relating to the status of refugees as amended by the 1967 Protocol thereto and the question of a marriage by an applicant to an Irish citizen has no relevance to such consideration.
